Domestic Violence and Abuse

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse then we want to help.

Your safety is our number one aim and we will ensure that you have access to specialist support and advice so you do not have to deal with this on your own.

Did you know…

  • 1 in 4 women experience domestic abuse during their lifetime
  • 1 in 6 men experience domestic abuse during their lifetime
  • 2 women are killed each week by their partner or former partner
  • 1 in 4 people identifying as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender experience domestic abuse during their lifetime

What is Domestic Abuse?
Any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are or have been intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality.

This can encompass, but is not limited to; the following types of abuse:

  • Psychological and emotional, e.g. threats, intimidation, isolation, verbal abuse, humiliation, degradation. Controlling behaviour designed to make a person subordinate and/or dependant
  • Physical, e.g. slapping, pushing, kicking, punching, stabbing
  • Sexual, e.g. rape and non-consensual sex acts
  • Financial, controlling of finances
  • ‘Honour’ based violence, female genital mutilation (FGM) and forced marriage

There are a number of organisations out there who can help:

Police – 999 in an emergency or 101 for a non-emergency situation

Gloucestershire Domestic Abuse Support services (GDASS) – 0845 602 9035 or www.gdass.org.uk
GDASS can:

  • provide practical local support.
  • help you and your children stay safe in your own home
  • help you access specialist legal advice
  • help you with other agencies (e.g. Benefits and Housing)
  • help you find a Place of Safety if you cannot stay at home
  • help you and your children move on
